We are the AS IS Book Club.  Our name, AS IS, reflects an important value for all of us and is based on an AS IS pewter pin designed by Lena Guyot.

She includes this explanation with the pin:

"On the journey of the self, there comes a time when we make peace with who we are, respecting our strengths and accepting our weaknesses. We cease to sit in judgment on ourselves or others and get on with life".

Sometime in 1987 or 1988 a group of registered nurses, a social worker, a medical records director, and later a physical therapist started our book club. At that time we all worked at Plaza Medical Center of Fort Worth, formerly Medical Plaza Hospital. Combined we have more than 300 years of experience in health care.  We continue meeting monthly to enjoy our books, food, and fellowship. One of our founding members lives in Tennessee and communicates with us via phone and email.

Since we have been together for over 20 years, how can we begin to say what has been our most memorable event? We have enjoyed numerous books, over night cook-outs, pool side discussions, annual week-end vacations, and always good food. We have supported each other through raising and worrying about kids and grandkids; family illnesses; divorce and new husbands; losing jobs and new jobs; surviving that terrible C diagnosis (x3  of our members) and a severe cerebral bleed; even the too early death of one of our dear members. She was initially a reluctant reader but became the most diligent in completing the books on our monthly lists.

We feel like a true sisterhood.
